What is Academic Challenge?
Academic Challenge is similar to a team-based Jeopardy! game. As teams of four, students compete against other schools in several different subjects including:
- Literature
- History
- Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and more)
- Fine Arts (visual art, music, architecture, and musicals)
- Geography
- Current Events
- Mythology (Greco-Roman, Norse, Egyptian, and more)
- Religion
- Mathematics (Concepts and computational problems)
- Social Science (Sociology, psychology, anthropology, and economics)
- Philosophy
- Pop Culture (sports, video games, TV shows, and movies)
How do I join Academic Challenge?
Every student who is interested is more than welcome to join the Academic Challenge team. Practices during the school year are held from 3:00 - 4:30 after school on Wednesdays in Room 3108 at the high school. Please click here to request more information.
Join Remind
Remind is a service that allows us to send out one message to several people in a group via text or email. Through Remind we will send out reminders for practices, announcements, and eventually tournament information once the season begins. Students, parents, or both are welcome to sign up for Remind messages. If you sign up for text you do not need to sign up for email and vice versa.

A History of Success
In 2008, the first middle school student began practicing with the high school academic challenge team because we did not have a middle school program available. In 2011, a program was officially started at Northmont Middle School, competing in a handful of local tournaments. In 2016, under the leadership of high school captain Kara Combs and high school advisor David Jones, the Middle School team was completely reimagined, serving as both a developmental arm of the successful high school academic challenge team as well as a competitive entity of its own, competing in numerous tournaments with the goal of winning state and national championships at the middle school level.
The Northmont Academic Challenge team has a long history of success. The High School team has won 10 state championships, 2 national championships, and has won the GWOC a record 27 times. As the Middle School competition grows around the state and nation, our goal is to achieve that same level of success at the middle school level.
After being officially formed in 2016, the middle school team has had many successes. Below are some notable ones:
2016-2017
The Northmont Academic Challenge team has a long history of success. The High School team has won 10 state championships, 2 national championships, and has won the GWOC a record 27 times. As the Middle School competition grows around the state and nation, our goal is to achieve that same level of success at the middle school level.
After being officially formed in 2016, the middle school team has had many successes. Below are some notable ones:
2016-2017
- Qualified for 2017 NAQT National Championship (our first ever national qualification)
- Placed in the top ten at Ohio's NAQT Middle School State Championship
- Top four finishes at the Copley Invitational and the Detroit Catholic Central Invitational
- Finished 72nd out of 160 teams at NAQT Middle School National Championship
- Samantha Street was the 34th highest scorer in the tournament (Total of 789 participants)
- Placed in the top ten at Ohio's NAQT Middle School State Championship
- Placed 3rd at the Miami Valley School Fall Kick-off Tournament
- Placed 4th at Ohio's 1st Annual OAC (Ohio Academic Competition) State Championship
- Copley Invitational Bracket Champions
- Qualified for 2019 NAQT Nationals (2nd time in school history; finished 135th of 176 teams)
- Placed t-5th at Ohio’s NAQT Middle School State Championship
- Placed 3rd at the 2nd Annual OAC Middle School State Championship
- St. Barnabas Early Bird OAC Tournament Champions (Our First MS Tournament Championship in School History!!)
- Tippecanoe Academic Challenge JV Tournament Champions (won the JV division of a High School tournament!!)
- Qualified for 2020 NAQT Nationals (unfortunately, nationals were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic)
- Solon Comet Clash Middle School Champions (2nd tournament win this year!!)
- Copley Invitational Middle School Champions (Largest MS Tournament in Ohio - 48 teams; 3rd tournament win this year!!)
- Runner up at the Comet Winter Clash Middle School Invitational
- Qualified for 2021 NAQT Nationals
- Placed 3rd at Ohio's NAQT Middle School State Championship
- Ethan Kral was the highest scorer in the tournament
- Finished 64th in the country at NAQT Nationals (our highest finish ever!)
- Ethan Kral was the 19th highest scorer in the country (first tournament All Star in team history!)
